About IIP Kolkata Centre:
The second regional centre of IIP was set up at Kolkata in 1973. Initially the centre became functional in
a rented premise at Elgin Road, Kolkata with activities like short term
training programmes in packaging, one day seminar / workshops on specific
subject, training to the MSME etc. Subsequently, the centre has developed a
testing laboratory with a minimum testing facility for the testing of different
quality parameters of packaging materials like paper, paper board and
corrugated fiber board boxes.
However, a need was
arisen to expand its activities to meet the demand of industry located in the
eastern region. Subsequently, the Institute acquired one-acre plot at Block CP
10, Sector-V, Salt Lake, Kolkata and building was constructed in phase wise. The
institute was shifted at Salt Lake, Kolkata in 1993 and become operational in full-fledged.
Gradually the institute expands it activity in various ways with the progressive
development and demand of Packaging industries. Apart from the full-fledged
testing facility, in 2003, the institute started the 3 months certificate
programme in packaging technology, consultancy services on package design and
development etc.
However, a detailed study
was carried out about the activities of Kolkata centre in 2010 and it was
realized that there was an urgent need to introduce 2 years full time post
graduate Diploma programme in packaging in order to facilitate the youth
hailing from Eastern part of India to undertake this educational programme and
also to make their carrier in the field of packaging. Accordingly, the single
storey building was converted to three storey building with area of 24200 sq.
ft. and the first batch of PGDP was started in 2010.
The centre has upgraded
the testing laboratory which has having the total area of 8000 sq. ft. and accredited to the National Accreditation
Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) as per
ISO/IEC:17025-2017.
To organize the
conferences, seminars and training programme, the institute has constructed a theatre
Style Multipurpose Hall of 4875 sq. ft having seating capacity of 220 persons
in the year of 2015.
