IIP KOLKATA

The Eastern regional centre of the Institute was set up in Kolkata in 1976 in a rented premise at Elgin Road, Kolkata. Subsequently, the Institute acquired a land of one acre at Block CP-10, Sector - V, Salt Lake, Bidhan Nagar, Kolkata and a new building was constructed for the regional centre in 1989. The Eastern regional centre has well equipped testing laboratory for the testing of packaging materials and packages. This particular centre is providing services to the industries located in the entire eastern region of the country i.e. West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand and also the North Eastern region. Initially, this particular centre was involved in activities such as testing of packaging materials and packages, conducting short term training programmes, three months certificate programme and also problem solving consultancy.

However, over a period of time, there has been a great improvement in the industrial scenario and many more packaging industries have been set up. This has created a great demand for packaging professionals. Moreover, it is observed that a number of students from the Eastern region do take admissions into two years Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Packaging Technology which is being conducting by the Institute at Mumbai since 1985.

In order to provide educational facilities to youngsters hailing from the Eastern as well North Eastern region, the Institute commenced the two years, full-time Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Packaging Technology at IIP-Kolkata in the year 2010 with an intake of 15 students and now, the number has increased to 30 students. More interestingly, the students passing out from IIP-Kolkata have been placed at various packaging converting and user industry and a 100% placement of the students from IIP-Kolkata has been recorded.

In recent days, the Institute has taken the initiative to upgrade testing laboratories under the 12th Five Year Plan in order to have the facility to obtain accreditation to the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratory (NABL) as per ISO / IEC: 17025-2005. In addition, the expansion programme of the Institute is also in progress by way of adding two more floors with an additional covered area of 12,000 sq. ft. so that the on-going two years Post Graduate Diploma Programme can be conducted by the Institute in an efficient and effective manner.
